the mission of integrating citizens of different cultures and nationalities by promoting free
linguistic and cultural exchanges . Anyone could apply to learn a language and culture. We created informal classes where everyone could participate as students or teachers according to which languages they knew and which they wanted to learn. In the LLE we had 144 students divided by 16 groups and 8 different languageswhich was recognized as a success by various local and national entities.
As we started to think about the 2nd edition, we identified some limitations of the existing model. One
of the challenges we faced was related to sustainability: the growth we wished to achieve would imply a
pressure on the project’s budget while it didn’t have any revenues. That was when, in collaboration with the
Fundação EDP through their project Social Lab, we co-created a new version of the project: SPEAK, as it is
now referred to.
SPEAK is not as a revolution but an evolution of the LLE. We want more and better social impact,
more classrooms, better facilities and more resources. We believe this model is the path we should follow in the
future!

O Leiria Language Exchange (LLE) surgiu pelas mãos da Associação Fazer Avançar em Fevereiro de 2012 com a missão de promover a integração de cidadãos de diferentes culturas e nacionalidades, através da partilha de conhecimentos linguísticos e culturais. Para isso, promoveu-se o encontro entre pessoas de diferentes origens num formato de aulas informais em que os participantes podiam ser tanto alunos como tutores e possibilitando assim a troca de conhecimentos linguísticos e culturais. O LLE contou com 144 alunos divididos por 16 turmas e 8 idiomas diferentes o que foi reconhecido como um sucesso por várias entidades locais e nacionais.
Quando começámos a pensar na 2ª edição, identificámos algumas limitações do modelo existente. Um dos desafios à evolução prendia-se com a sustentabilidade: o crescimento que se desejava atingir implicava uma pressão orçamental acrescida sobre um projeto sem receitas próprias. Foi então que, em conjunto com a Fundação EDP através do projeto Social Lab, co-criámos a nova versão do projeto: o SPEAK, como hoje o conhecemos.
O SPEAK não surge como uma revolução mas sim como uma evolução ao Leiria Language Exchange. Queremos mais e melhor impacto social, mais salas, melhores instalações e mais recursos e acreditamos que este novo modelo é o caminho a seguir para o futuro!

How did it work?
In this program you could learn any language available for free. The rules were very straightforward, you just needed to tell us::
- Your availability. At which days and what time were you available to learn or teach a new language/culture?
- The language you wanted to learn and your level.
- The language you could teach and information about how and where you learned it (Example 1: “I’m a native speaker, and I feel comfortable with teaching.” Example 2: “I lived in Spain for 5 years and I did a Spanish course of 1 year, I’m proficient and although I never taught any language I’m pretty sure I’ll do a nice job.”)
Note that although you needed to tell us which language you could teach, you could not be required to teach. No worries was the case you could have your classes for free anyway.
Then, depending on the applications we received, we created classes in our office in Leiria with a maximum number of 8 students per class. We made sure the time suited students and teachers. We contacted everyone individually before publishing the classes and timetables to provide all information needed.
Como funcionou o projecto?
O projecto Leiria Language Exchange permitiu aprender uma língua e cultura gratuitamente. As regras eram simples, só precisavas dizer-nos:
- A tua disponibilidade. A que dias e a que horas podias aprender ou ensinar uma língua?
- A língua e cultura que querias aprender e o teu nível. O que é que já sabias?
- A língua e cultura que podias ensinar e informações sobre como e onde a aprendeste. (Exemplo 1: “É a minha língua-mãe, e estou apto a ensiná-la.” Exemplo 2: “Vivi em Espanha os últimos 5 anos e fiz um curso durante o primeiro ano. Tenho um nível muito bom e embora nunca tenha ensinado sei que vou fazer um bom trabalho!”)
Nota que embora tivesses que nos dizer a língua que querias aprender e a língua que podias ensinar, não terás obrigatoriamente que dar aulas. Mesmo que não precisemos que dês aulas, poderás ter aulas gratuitamente!
Dependendo do número e tipo de inscrições que recebemos, criámos turmas de 8 alunos no máximo. As aulas decorrem na sede da Associação em Leiria. Antes de oficializarmos os horários e turmas contactámos cada aluno e tutor individualmente para dar toda a informação necessária e confirmar as inscrições.
Information for Students
The teacher is the Boss. Don’t complain about the way teachers lead their classes. You will have time to give your advices about what would you like to change and other things. During your classes enjoy and do your best to learn 
Your teacher will be fun and will do his/her best. Advices are welcome, but wait until your teacher asks for them. And he/she will ask your opinion.
Don’t miss classes. Teachers, your collegues and coordinators of this program make an effort to run this amazing experience of learning languages and exchange cultures.

O tutor controla a aula. Não sejas inadequado nem interrompas com sugestões sobre como dar uma aula. Vais ter tempo para dares as tuas sugestões. Usufrui das aulas e dá o teu melhor para aprenderes. As aulas vão ser informais e o teu tutor vai definir um tempo para discutirem ideias sobre como melhorarem o vosso nível.
Não faltes. Tutores, os teus colegas e coordenadores deste programa trabalham muito para criar esta experiência incrível de aprendizagem de línguas.
Information for Teachers
The ultimate goal of the classes is to learn/practice a language. You should focus on communication. Results first, complex details later.
There may be classes of different levels. No worries with that. We will discuss the level of the classes in the beginning with the different teachers available.

O objectivo destas aulas é essencialmente permitir aos alunos aprederem ou praticarem uma língua de forma gratuita, informal e divertida. As aulas devem ser focadas na comunicação. Resultados primeiro, detalhes depois.
Provavelmente vamos criar turmas de níveis diferentes. Não te preocupes o nível que vais leccionar vai ser discutido atempadamente para conheceres a tua turma e os seus objectivos.
